The Office of the Dean of Students Case Manager is a unique and specialized position which blends the functions of non-clinical student consultation, program coordination of student referrals and intake, systems development for reporting and maintenance of student cases, leadership in addressing factors which contribute to student attrition, and working to improve student academic success.
This position coordinates the university's process for addressing the needs of students who have crises with academic, family, health, and other issues by providing referrals, follow-up services and, when necessary, withdrawing the student from the university.
The position serves as the primary communicator to academic deans and designees, health care and mental health providers, staff, and parents relative to students who need additional/other resources to succeed at East Carolina University and/or require withdrawal from the university. The Case Manager position collects, reviews, coordinates, and manages student cases that come to the Dean of Students Office through ECU Cares, direct telephone calls, e-mails, personal referrals and the University Behavioral Concerns Team (UBCT). The Case Manager reports directly to the Assistant Dean of Students/CARES Team Coordinator and may require work on evenings and weekends, as needed.
Specific Responsibilities Case Management (70%)
Serves as the primary conduit for information to the University Behavioral Concerns Team concerning potential threats of violence, real or perceived, to members of the campus community;
Serves ex officio as a member of the University Behavioral Concerns Team (threat assessment team);
Serves as the primary conduit for information to the CARE team concerning students in need of behavioral intervention and support from Student Affairs professionals;
Serves ex officio as a member of the CARE Team (behavioral intervention team);
Provides case management for Care Team and University Behavioral Concerns Team cases, including:
Meets with students, faculty, staff, parents, and others, as needed
Maintains detailed records within database
Supports the work of the Assistant Dean, Associate Deans and the Dean of Students
Monitors the progress of student cases
Communicates to stakeholders within a student case, as needed
Gathers appropriate information regarding students and individuals of concern for assessment and intervention
Administrative Responsibilities (30%)
Maintains the ECUCARES phone line and website reporting system to identify potential acts of violence, threats or reports of concerning behavior on campus;
Responds to, clarifies, assesses and triages direct, telephone, or electronic information from members of the university community (i.e., students, staff, faculty) concerned about faculty, staff or student incidents of actual or potential violence, as well as self-reports or reports from others regarding students experiencing significant stressors to their success;
Provides information and seamless referrals to the appropriate resources, including law enforcement agencies, Student Affairs, Human Resources, Student Health Services, the Center for Counseling and Student Development, the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, University Counsel, and the threat assessment team (UBCT);
Ensures that emergency or immediate threats of violence are properly directed to the appropriate law enforcement or emergency response agency;
Serves as the University's McKinney-Vento Act / Homeless Youth Contact;
Develops marketing materials, conducts presentations and presents to the campus community information regarding ECUCARES, the CARE Team and the University Behavioral Concerns Team, as well as resources for students in crisis;
Cultivates relationships with university and community resources and readily contacts resources on the behalf of students;
Supports the work of the Dean of Students office when managing a crisis or student death;
Performs related duties as required.

Master's degree in Higher Education Leadership, Counseling, Social Work, Education, or related field.
Knowledge of legal issues in higher education
