Organizational Unit Overview
The Division of Student Affairs actively supports the University’s missions of education, research, and service by providing comprehensive programs and services to assist each student in developing intellectually, socially, morally, and culturally. The Division anticipates students’ developmental needs throughout their collegiate experiences and promotes students development by fostering a community of learning, which encourages individual student involvement and participation. The Division of Student Affairs provides a broad range of support services, activities, and programs that seek to: Assist students in developing respect and appreciation for individual differences, interpersonal civility, and human rights. Enhance the learning environment, facilitate retention, and optimize the student experience. Accommodate the diverse needs of all students.

Support a community environment that is welcoming, safe, and secure. Assist students in meeting their basic needs for housing, nutrition, and physical and emotional well-being. Provide the means for students to become active participants and leaders in their own learning. Assist students in developing logical thought processes and sound decision-making skills. Assist students in developing an appreciation of the arts. Moreover, the division seeks to contribute to the development of the whole individual by fostering in each student a deeper appreciation of the importance of life-long learning, individual responsibility, and human diversity. Through collaboration, the division provides programs and services that are grounded in theory, assessment, and sound practice.

At East Carolina University in the Division of Student Affairs, the Office of the Dean of Students is the campus resource for addressing and responding to student issues and concerns. Dean of Students office staff often serves as a liaison between students, faculty, staff and administrators. The Dean’s Office staff assists students and family members who are navigating their way through various campus procedures and often helps to develop, articulate, disseminate and enforce East Carolina University rules, regulations, and policies.

The Office of the Dean of Students works directly with students to help solve problems, to assist with individual and group crisis management, and to advocate for students, when appropriate. Students are encouraged to visit staff in the Dean of Students office to discuss ideas, personal issues, or general concerns about student life at East Carolina University. Through connections with other university departments and offices, the Office of the Dean of Students supports the needs of students and student communities and identifies resources to address those needs.

The Office of the Dean of Students is committed to teaching civic engagement by cultivating a caring environment that values personal and academic integrity, respect for all people, and responsible citizenship where students are held accountable for their behavior. Through collaboration within the university, the Dean of Students office staff is invested in serving students in a safe, sound, healthy environment.

Job Duties:

Specific Responsibilities
Case Management (70%)

  • Serves as the primary conduit for information to the University Behavioral Concerns Team concerning potential threats of violence, real or perceived, to members of the campus community;
  • Serves ex officio as a member of the University Behavioral Concerns Team (threat assessment team);
  • Serves as the primary conduit for information to the CARE team concerning students in need of behavioral intervention and support from Student Affairs professionals;
  • Serves ex officio as a member of the CARE Team (behavioral intervention team);
  • Provides case management for Care Team and University Behavioral Concerns Team cases, including:
  • Meets with students, faculty, staff, parents, and others, as needed
  • Maintains detailed records within database
  • Supports the work of the Assistant Dean, Associate Deans and the Dean of Students
  • Monitors the progress of student cases
  • Communicates to stakeholders within a student case, as needed
  • Gathers appropriate information regarding students and individuals of concern for assessment and intervention

Administrative Responsibilities (30%)

  • Maintains the ECU CARES phone line and website reporting system to identify potential acts of violence, threats or reports of concerning behavior on campus;
  • Responds to, clarifies, assesses and triages direct, telephone, or electronic information from members of the university community (i.e., students, staff, faculty) concerned about faculty, staff or student incidents of actual or potential violence, as well as self-reports or reports from others regarding students experiencing significant stressors to their success;
  • Provides information and seamless referrals to the appropriate resources, including law enforcement agencies, Student Affairs, Human Resources, Student Health Services, the Center for Counseling and Student Development, the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, University Counsel, and the threat assessment team (UBCT);
  • Ensures that emergency or immediate threats of violence are properly directed to the appropriate law enforcement or emergency response agency;
  • Serves as the University’s McKinney-Vento Act / Homeless Youth Contact;
  • Develops marketing materials, conducts presentations and presents to the campus community information regarding ECU CARES, the CARE Team and the University Behavioral Concerns Team, as well as resources for students in crisis;
  • Cultivates relationships with university and community resources and readily contacts resources on the behalf of students;
  • Supports the work of the Dean of Students office when managing a crisis or student death;
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education Leadership, Counseling, Social Work, Education, or related field.
  • Knowledge of legal issues in higher education
  • Demonstrated experience interacting with the public, parents, students, staff, faculty

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

  • Ability to build positive and effective relationships across campus and within the community
  • Ability to thoroughly document conversations and actions regarding case management
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Organizational, administrative, interpersonal/written/verbal communication, and team-building skills
  • Ability to multi-task and independently manage cases with minimal supervision
  • Ability to provide exemplary customer service
  • Willingness to communicate and work effectively with diverse populations
