Position Summary

This position oversees the universityâ™s TRiO Student Support Services project, a federally-funded initiative that removes barriers to retention and graduation and facilitates academic success for approximately 200 Washington University undergraduates, and is a program within the Taylor Family Center for Student Success. The TRiO Project Director is responsible for the overall management and accountability of the TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) project, including directing the planning and implementation of project services, advising TRiO-eligible students, developing and managing the budget, managing TRiO SSS project staff, monitoring TRiO student performance, evaluating the project, and reporting to and communicating with the U.S. Department of Education. This position regularly works with senior leaders in key campus partner entities, including but not limited to Student Affairs, Student Financial Services, Admissions, and the undergraduate academic deans of the four schools.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage the overall planning, implementation, and evaluation of services for TRiO-eligible students to create a high quality experience for TRiO-eligible students. Work closely with key campus partners to leverage existing resources within the institution to deliver services to TRiO students. Through ongoing project assessment and feedback mechanisms, determine need for specific project services and adjust service offerings as necessary.
  • Lead the process by which TRiO SSS project staff design and deliver individualized coaching/mentoring to TRiO students to remove barriers to retention and graduation and facilitate academic success at Washington University. Regularly utilize student performance data (e.g., course grades, GPA) to determine appropriate interventions. As part of this responsibility, the Project Director will serve as a coach/mentor for TRiO students.
  • Manage the financial activities of the TRiO SSS grant, including developing and managing the budget, approval of expenditures, preparation of financial reports, payroll, and purchasing.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate TRiO SSS project staff.
  • Prepare competitive TRiO SSS grant renewal application and grant-related reports to the U.S. Department of Education, including the TRiO SSS annual performance report. Reply to all inquiries from the U.S. Department of Education and serve as main point of contact between U.S. Department of Education and Washington University for purposes of the TRiO SSS project.
  • Serve as TRiO liaison with Washington University administration, academic schools/units, faculty, and staff.


Preferred Qualifications

    • Seven years of related professional experience, preferably in higher education or related education environments working with undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds.
    • Experience planning and implementing educational programs.
    • Professional and/or academic experience in higher education working with faculty, academic advisors, and other key stakeholders to ensure academic success for undergraduate students.
    • Experience managing multiple professional staff members/leading a team to deliver results.
    • Experience in grant writing and preparing and managing grant-related budgets and financial reports.
    • Experience collecting, reporting, and analyzing program/service performance data, especially in an education setting.
    • Experience with student information systems (SIS) and Microsoft Office, and demonstrated ability to learn other programs.
    • Knowledge of best practices for serving undergraduate students from TRiO-eligible backgrounds.
    • Student-oriented and committed to maintaining the exceptional quality of the undergraduate experience for students.
    • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement programming for students from diverse backgrounds.
    • Excellent interpersonal and professional skills and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders in various roles and from diverse backgrounds.
    • Strong communication, project management, and resource-planning skills.
    • Strong working knowledge and appreciation for the values of an academic community.
    • Proficient in analyzing and interpreting student outcomes data, and conducting evaluations/assessments to determine program/service effectiveness.

    Required Qualifications

    Masterâ™s degree in related field and three years related experience or Bachelorâ™s degree in related field and eight years related experience.

    Salary Range

    $63,900.00 - $109,100.00 / Annually

    The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
