Director of New Student and Family Experiences
Student Success, Inclusion & Belonging


Job Summary
The Director of New Student and Family Experiences (NSFE) reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Success, Inclusion and Belonging in Student Affairs with the primary responsibility for managing and providing leadership to the New Student and Family Experiences unit (A new unit merging New and Transfer Student Programs AND Parent and Family Programs-effective July 1, 2023). Responsible for the strategic visioning, implementation, and assessment of orientation, transitional support and first-year experience for new students. New Student is defined as first-semester undergraduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, including a student who transfers from another institution. Facilitates collaborations with divisional and campus partners including Student Affairs, Academic Affairs/Colleges, Enrollment Management/Admissions, International Student and Scholar Services, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; and Intercollegiate Athletics to enhance the student-centered, identity-conscious orientation, transition and first-year experiences that focus on student success and enhance sense of belonging of new students and their family members. Provide vision and theoretical frameworks for effective family engagement strategies and initiatives that positively impact student success, including family communication and events over the student academic career.


Duties & Responsibilities

Student Success, Inclusion and Belonging Advocacy

  • Provide leadership for a university-wide new student orientation, transition and first-year experiences to positively impact recruitment, retention, persistence, and graduation initiatives.
  • Facilitate collaborations with other units, especially within Student Affairs; Enrollment Management/Admissions; Academic Colleges; Intercollegiate Athletics; Special Events, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, in the design, implementation, and assessment of student-centered, identity-conscious
    orientation and transition experiences that focus on student success and enhances sense of belonging of new students and their family members.
  • Oversee parent and family orientation/transition resources, ongoing resources to support their student(s), communication strategies (newsletter, list-serv and social media) and Moms and Dads weekend events.
  • Assist with policy development to support student orientation, transition and first-year experiences.
  • Aid in processes and collaborative decisions as a representative of New Student and Family Experiences and/or Student Affairs on campus-wide standing and ad-hoc committees.


Administrative and Supervision

  • Direct supervision over all operations of New Student and Family Experiences (NSFE). Responsible for administering programming and services offered by NSFE.
  • Responsible for budget planning and oversight, delegation of tasks, conflict management, planning and goal setting.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating NSFE professional, support and student staff.
  • Provide oversight of the University relationship with the Moms and Dads Associations.
  • Partner with Student Affairs Advancement to develop fundraising and sponsorship opportunities.


Assessment and Evaluation

  • In conjunction with Student Affairs, implement an assessment and evaluation strategy which informs a culturally significant approach to data-driven co-curricular design.
  • Institute an outcomes-driven method to the development and implementation of educational programs.
  • Provide leadership in reviewing the mission and goals of the New Student and Family Experiences and creating a strategic plan consistent with the Student Affairs Strategic Plan.
  • Conduct regular program evaluations and coordinate objectives with Student Affairs and University goals.
  • Coordinate the production of reports for internal and external audiences.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:
    • Master's degree, preferably in higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, or related field. Five years of professional experience in student affairs or similar higher education administration.
  • Experience:
    • Five years of professional experience in student affairs or similar higher education administration.
    • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing identity-conscious orientation, transition, first-year experience, and/or retention experiences/interventions that support student success.
    • Experience with parents and family member engagement.
    • Experience supervising full time staff or equivalent years of experience demonstrating one's ability to supervise full time staff.
    • Experience working in complex, fast-paced, political environments.
    • Experience with strategic visioning, planning, problem solving, and assessment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience:
    • Experience developing experiences that promote transfer student success.
    • Experience supervising student staff.
    • Experience with crisis management and diplomatic communication with parents and families.
    • Demonstrated experience using theoretical frameworks under-girding student identity development, social location, and/or sense of belonging in developing student experiences.
    • Experience in fundraising and working with alumni/diverse constituents.
    • Experience in facilitating policy review, reform, and development.
    • Experience in marketing and communication strategies (e.g., electronic newsletters, websites, social media).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills with the ability to present effectively to a variety of audiences, including faculty, administrators, students, and parents/families.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and large-scale program development abilities including attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 8/1/2023.The salary range for this position is $85,000 - $100,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
