Position Summary
The Chemistry Department at Washington University in St. Louis administers Supplemental Programming to support, mentor, and train students enrolled in our two General Chemistry course sequences. The Supplemental Programs are essential components of the General Chemistry curriculum, with approximately 800 students enrolled between the two courses, and 80 â“ 100 peer mentors trained per semester. The Programs include: (1) a Peer-Led Team-Learning (PLTL) program, (2) a Residential Peer Mentoring (RPM) program, and (3) a Transition program for our Introductory General Chemistry sequence. We seek two Academic Learning Program Managers to manage these programs, working with faculty and staff to ensure the different components are well-integrated, cohesive, and remain strongly interrelated to facilitate administration, enhance the training of the students and mentors, and provide a united message to involved undergraduate students.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Oversee the Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL) Program.
The PLTL Program is the largest General Chemistry supplemental program, and has a very well-defined philosophy. The Academic Learning Program Managers will administer and develop the program, including duties such as:
Teach or co-teach the SAM (Seminar in Academic Mentoring) course for PLTL leaders and Chemistry Peer Mentors in the Transition Program, to introduce them to the pedagogy and philosophy of PLTL and further deepen their Chemistry knowledge.
May teach or co-teach the PAAM (Practical Applications of Academic Mentoring) course for PLTL leaders, to prepare them for weekly study groups in which students participate.
Train, mentor, and give feedback from observations of the peer leaders when they meet with their groups.
Formally observe and evaluate the peer leaders to provide feedback and professional development.
Organize the students into study groups according to their needs.
Oversee selection process of new PLTL leaders.
Track attendance for both students and leaders. Award course credit for students enrolled in the PLTL subsections who have successfully completed the program.
Oversee the General Chemistry Residential Peer Mentor (RPM) Program; for Introductory Track, Assist with the General Chemistry Transition Program.
The RPM program is set up by the Center for Teaching and Learning and overseen by Residential Life, but Chemistry trains, mentors, and oversees the ~10 Chemistry RPMs to ensure they work well with the General Chemistry course. The program duties include:
Teach or co-teach the RPMs in the PAAM (Practical Applications of Academic Mentoring) course to train the RPMs to facilitate help sessions and group work sessions properly.
Administer the Chemistry RPM program, including scheduling sessions.
Provide feedback from observing the performance of the RPMs.
Serve as a Chemistry Department liaison to administer and oversee the selection process of new Chemistry RPMs.
The General Chemistry Transition Program helps chemistry students with reduced access to advanced high school preparation transition to learning chemistry at a college level. The program involves 45 -50 General Chemistry students every year. The Academic Learning Program Manager will help develop and administer the program, including duties such as:
Evaluate the results of the chemistry assessment exam and the studentsâ™ SAT, ACT, and AP STEM scores to help identify students who would benefit from the program.
Organize students into peer mentoring groups according to their needs.
Formally observe and evaluate the programâ™s peer mentors and provide feedback.
Advanced Administration of General Chemistry Courses
Teach and help organize weekly recitation sections.
Respond to questions from students about administration of the General Chemistry courses and Supplemental Program, about chemistry content-related questions, about exam and quiz grading, etc.
Proof-read quizzes, exams, and other course materials for clarity and accuracy; may contribute original content for these materials.
Participate in Education Research.
During the summer months, the Academic Learning Program Manager will consult current literature to evolve the SAM and PAAM courses.
The Academic Learning Program Manager may also be involved with educational-development activities or education-research projects, collaboratively with members of the Chemistry faculty or the Center for Teaching and Learning.
Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
PhD in relevant field.
Two years of teaching experience.
Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
Knowledge of current teaching methods and pedagogy in the STEM fields.Â
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Willingness to learn innovative teaching techniques and philosophies.
Good management and supervisory skills.
An ability to work collaboratively in an instruction team.
Highly proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.).
Required Qualifications
Masterâ™s degree in Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics or related field and one year of related experience.

Salary Range
$50,500.00 - $86,200.00 / AnnuallyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
