The Division of Student Affairs includes University Career Center, Center for Multicultural Student Services, Community Service-Learning, Counseling Center, Dean of Students, Disability Services, Student Accountability & Restorative Practices, Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity & Expression, Health Promotion, Orientation, Residence Life, Student Life, University Health Center, University Recreation. The division is an integral part of the campus community and works collaboratively with the other divisions of the university in supporting the mission, vision, and values of the university. The Department of Student Life at James Madison University is currently seeking applicants for the Associate Director for Student Life. This position reports to the Director for Student Life.

The Department of Student Life is committed to, and accountable for, advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in all of its forms. We foster belonging through the personal growth and development of an engaged citizenry by providing inclusive experiences and spaces.

Duties and Responsibilities

Supervision:
Directly supervises the Assistant Director of Off Campus Life, Assistant Director of Campus Programming, and Assistant Director of Student Leadership Development. Assists the Director in providing strategic leadership for supervisory areas.

Program Oversight:
Support the development of all programs that are offered to the JMU student body in a wide array of applications including leadership programs, the administration of over 350 University recognized clubs and organizations and their programs, major campus-wide concerts and programs offered through the University Program Board, transitional and basic needs programming, and staff driven programming. Serve as co-chairperson for Weeks of Welcome. Serve as the co-chairperson for the Student Life Advisory Board. Support implementation of Adam's Law compliance.

Service Delivery:
Oversee the development of new and enhanced support services or offerings. Including but limited to maintenance and usage of the Be Involved plat, form, review and development of policy, support managing the student organization accountability process, signing of agreements, coordinating the creation and improvement of large, campus-wide programs, and expansion of Explore Madison.

Risk and Crisis Management:
Be knowledgeable of laws, regulations, policies, and procedures that relate to its respective responsibilities and that pose potential legal obligations, limitations, risks, and liabilities to the institution as a whole. Ability to identify, assess, evaluate, mitigate, and work to control risk. Be familiar with student safety issues, the campus partners who work to prevent them, and research-supported strategies for addressing them. Ability to use situational awareness, adaptability, decisiveness, and clear communication to manage potential crisis.

Assessment:
Work with direct reports to develop and implement ongoing assessment efforts for supervisory areas with the expressed purpose of measuring attainment of objectives and program improvement. Assessment should ascertain needs, participations and non-participation demographics, participant satisfaction, and accomplishment of stated goals and learning objectives. Assessment results should inform resource allocation, program improvement, and marketing processes.

Marketing:
Ensure direct report areas are using various marketing mediums and strategies to disseminate information. Assist with the maintenance of websites.

Resource Management:
Coordinate with supervisory areas staff to maintain all office budgets, ensure appropriate and effective use of available resources, and assist in the annual budget development process.

Collaboration:
Proactively develop and maintain collaborative relationships with all departments across Student Affairs as well as other stakeholders where such relationships would promote efficiency/effectiveness in fulfilling the department and divisional mission.

Committee Work:
Serve on department and university committees. Actively participate in accomplishing established goals and objectives.

Professional Development:
Accomplish a minimum of 20 hours of professional development, attend departmental professional development training, participate in staff retreats and other job-related training. Effectively utilize conferences and other professional development opportunities as tools for staying current in the field of higher education. Support all staff in increasing their capabilities to contribute through departmental training and professional development.

Required Qualifications:


• Master's degree with at least 5 years work experience in a higher education leadership programming setting, or similar environment.
• Experience supervising full-time employees
• Experience managing student staff or volunteers
• Knowledgeable of highly complex, programs (I.e. concerts, lectures, fairs)
• Skilled in advising and supporting students in the development of their leadership skills
• Knowledge of off campus living support and basic needs resources
• Commitment to student development
• Record of commitment to inclusiveness
• Experience utilizing data to drive decision-making
• Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously
• Ability to communicate with a variety of constituents

Preferred Qualifications:


• Skilled using different techniques to teach and engage students in a higher education environment
• Knowledgeable in basic marketing skills, social media platforms, recruitment techniques, and supervisory skills.
• Knowledgeable in multiple leadership theories and models.
• Be current on research and trends in the field of leadership studies and campus activities
