The Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) is recruiting an Associate Dean for Admissions. The position, requiring eligibility for a faculty appointment, effort will be negotiated at the time of hire. The Associate Dean will oversee and organize the comprehensive admissions program compliant with legal and accreditation standards. This position will be responsible for all components of student recruitment and admissions, inclusive of policies and procedures surrounding communication, application, screening, selection, and matriculation of students into the MD and combined programs at the Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons. In addition, the Associate Dean of Admissions works with the Director of Financial Aid to determine the allocation of scholarships at the time of the offer of admission. The Associate Dean of Admissions is entrusted with ensuring that the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons admits students who will embrace our values and thrive within the school.
The Dean of Admissions is appointed by the Dean of the Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons and reports directly to the Vice Dean for Education within the medical school. The Associate Dean for Admissions is supported in their responsibilities by an Assistant Dean for Admissions and 5 full time staff members.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee and implement all processes of admission for the Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons, ensuring full compliance with LCME standards and processes
Serves on and directs the admissions committee work to establish and implement policies and requirements, train and update members and health professions advisors.
Implement strategic initiatives as determined by the Vice Dean for Education and the medical education leadership team, also in concert with the goals of Columbia University
Work with the Vice Dean for Education, the Associate Dean for Student Diversity Inclusion and Belonging as well as the Director of Admissions to recruit and train faculty, staff and students to participate in the admissions processes.
Work with the Director of Financial Aid to determine scholarship and student aid awards
Develop ongoing quality improvement processes in the admissions space that draw upon best practices and ensure matriculation of a student body that will thrive at VP&S.
Work with the Center for Education Research and Evaluation and the Associate Deans for Curricular Affairs and Student Affairs, Support & Services to collect and provide data regarding the admissions process that enhance decision making in the educational programs at VP&S.
Work with the Center for Education Research and Evaluation to develop, evaluate, and implement innovative strategies in admissions, recruitment, and matriculation.
Work with the Associate Dean for Diversity Inclusion and Belonging to ensure a focus on inclusive excellence.
Oversee and implement outreach programs to enhance awareness about VP&S?s curricular programs and foster relationships with pre-health advisors, postbaccalaureate programs and priority degree programs locally and nationally
Provide updates on the admissions process to the faculty council and Committee on Educational Policy & Curriculum
Participate on the medical education leadership team for VP&S
Draft and implement policies and procedures for training, engagement and selection
Engage with Columbia University General Counsel to ensure Policies and Procedures developed by the office are sound
Engage current students and alumni in the process of recruitment of future colleagues
Admissions Strategy and Planning:
Develop and implement comprehensive admissions strategies to attract a diverse and highly qualified student body.
Collaborate with senior leadership to set annual enrollment goals and establish admissions policies and procedures.
Analyze data and trends to make data-driven decisions that enhance the admissions process.
Team Management:
Supervise and provide leadership to the admissions team, including admissions officers, student admissions representatives, and support staff.
Set clear performance expectations, conduct regular performance evaluations, and facilitate professional development opportunities for team members.
Admissions Process Oversight:
Oversee the entire admissions process, from application review to decision notification.
Ensure compliance with institutional policies, as well as state and federal regulations.
Continuously evaluate and improve the admissions process for efficiency and effectiveness.
Recruitment and Outreach:
Lead efforts to recruit a diverse and talented pool of prospective students through various outreach initiatives
Application Review and Selection:
Lead the review of applications, including evaluating transcripts, standardized test scores, essays, and letters of recommendation.
Collaborate with faculty and other stakeholders to select the incoming class.
Financial Aid and Scholarships:
Work closely with the financial aid office to ensure that admitted students have access to financial aid and scholarship opportunities.
Advise on the allocation of merit-based and need-based scholarships.
Data Analysis and Reporting:
Generate and analyze admissions data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
Prepare regular reports for institutional leadership on admissions metrics and outcomes.
Student Engagement and Yield:
Develop and implement strategies to engage admitted students and encourage their enrollment.
Track and manage yield rates to meet enrollment targets.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:
Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the admissions process and ensure equitable access for all prospective students.
Doctoral degree (MD, DO, or MD/PhD preferred)
Engaged in Admissions programming across any parts of the continuum
Experience working with medical students and in medical school leadership
Excellent communication skills and proven ability to work with diverse constituencies
Openness to collaboration and innovation in medical education

The Senior Associate/Associate Dean for Admissions at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons is a critical position that requires strong leadership, strategic thinking, and a commitment to the institution's mission and values. This position will be appointed at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor commensurate with experience.
Salary Ranges:
Associate Professor: $275,000-$359,319
Professor: $289,681-$374,000
