The Community Care Specialist serves as a member of the Residential Education (RE) team to provide immediate non-clinical response for crisis or other critical incidents involving students during night, overnight and weekend hours. The Community Care Specialist reports directly to the Associate Director of Student Behavior. The Community Care Specialists respond in-person to student incidents and coordinate support and follow-up plans with Student Health Services, Student Support and Advocacy or other RE professional staff, Resident Assistants (RAs), The New Schoolâ™s Department of Campus Safety, and NYC services including NYPD and EMS. The Care Specialist provides direct consultation for non-critical incidents, ongoing training, attend meetings, and may participate in student-facing programs related to these focal areas. The regular hours for this position are 35 hours, four/five shifts per week on a rotating basis, with the team operating 7 nights per week. Regular weekend/holiday coverage is required. Occasional participation in staff training or meetings outside of these hours may be requested. Care Specialist will operate out of Housing and Residential Education offices located at 72 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.Â
Additionally, this position works collaboratively with students, faculty, and administration to enhance the student experience for a population of 10,000 students.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides immediate on-site support and non-clinical intervention for crisis and critical incidents involving residential students during night, overnight and weekend hours.Â
Works collaboratively with Associate Director of Student Behavior and other RE senior leadership to train and implement educational and awareness initiatives regarding crisis response within the residence halls.Â
Directly responsible for working with all available internal and external resources and/or agencies to initiate, coordinate and implement action plans, following up as well as monitoring issues involving medical or mental health emergencies, incidents of violence or assaults, escalated verbal and or physical conflicts, and other community emergencies.
During designated hours, will respond to issues for the entire campus and after 10:00 pm will only respond to residential student emergencies.
Coordinate collaboration with on-call personnel within the residential education team and Student Support and Advocacy, Student Health Services, and Dean of Students.
Documents incidents through the data management system (PAVE) to ensure compliance with institutional and federal policies.
Conducts ongoing (annual/bi-annual) reviews of the RE crisis response protocols involving key campus constituencies such as faculty, staff, and students.
Develops, maintains, evaluates, and presents training to RE professional and paraprofessional team members to ensure proper education of the RE team related to emergency response protocols.. Prepares workshops, presentations, and various other forms of educational material.
Maintains effective partnerships with key departments including, but not limited to, Housing and Residential Education, Campus Safety, Student Equity, Accessibility & Title IX Services, Student Support and Advocacy, Student Health Services, and New York City Police Department.
Participates in university-wide events, including residence hall openings, Orientation, Welcome Week, Family Weekend, Discovery Days, and Commencement.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelorâ™s degree organizational psychology, higher education, human resources, human development, social work.
1-2 years of experience in residential life, student affairs, student support, or a related field outside of higher education such as social work, crisis response, health or wellness services, with skills in working directly with students navigating crises and the ability to implement response protocols as needed.Â
Interpersonal, listening, verbal, and written communication skills.Â
Demonstrated ability to trouble-shoot, problem-solve, and anticipate issues needing resolution.
Team work and ability to independently implement protocol.Â
Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as within a team in a fast-paced and adaptive environment, remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful, and professional.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Masterâ™s Degree in counseling, higher education, social work, or related field.
Previous experience with student crisis response and/or service in an on-call capacity.
Previous experience with response to psychiatric and psychological emergencies and sexual assault.Â
Familiarity with existing research on mental health challenges impacting college students.Â
Demonstrated intercultural competence, and a continuing commitment to advance equity, inclusion, and social justice practices in support of a diverse community.
