San José State University (SJSU) seeks a strategic and action-oriented leader who is collaborative, innovative, and committed to student success to serve as its first Associate Vice President and Dean of Students (AVP/DOS).
Founded in 1857, San José State University (SJSU) is the oldest public institution of higher education on the West Coast. Located in the heart of California's Silicon Valley, SJSU is the fifth largest of the 23 campuses of the California State University (CSU) system and the largest four-year university system in the United States. It is one of the most diverse universities in the U.S., with over 85% of its population self-reporting as students of color and 42% identifying as first-generation college students. It is also a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI). As one of the 200 top research universities in the nation, SJSU has robust NSF and NIH-funded research programs and one of the highest levels of research funding in the CSU system. SJSU also offers rigorous coursework to nearly 36,000 undergraduate and graduate students in ten colleges.
San José State University is well positioned to become a pre-eminent urban public university with strong enrollments and a renewed commitment to excellence in teaching and research. The campus is poised to grow and innovate, strengthening its connection to the surrounding San José and Silicon Valley community and further fulfilling its social justice mission of access and equity. The campus strategic plan—Transformation 2030—released in spring 2019 and updated under the leadership of President Teniente-Matson, provides the framework for unparalleled growth and prioritizes a sense of belonging and well-being and engaging students to thrive in campus life.
This is an exciting time to join the SJSU community, particularly with Dr. Mari Fuentes-Martin's appointment as Vice President for Student Affairs, and the launch of various strategic initiatives. The next AVP/DOS will be a key thought partner and innovator as the Division of Student Affairs and University leadership redefines the SJSU student experience. The AVP/DOS provides administrative oversight, policy development/implementation, and leadership for Student Involvement, Associated Students, Student Union, Student Conduct & Ethical Development, Behavioral Intervention Staff and Multidisciplinary Team, and the Student Ombudsperson, focusing on directly contributing to student success and retention through building community, increasing student engagement, ensuring a sense of belonging and providing opportunities for holistic development of SJSU undergraduate students.
The ideal candidate will have experience with student involvement, students of concern, and student advocacy and activism, and be willing to provide leadership for the campus regarding time, place, and manner regulations. Experience supervising, hiring, training, and evaluating director-level staff; the ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize, and plan work effectively, in a professional manner, in a detail oriented and fast paced environment; and a commitment to collaborative teamwork across academic and student affairs divisions, as well as other divisions, to build a sound campus environment for all will be essential for success. A master's degree is required; a doctoral degree is preferred.
All applications, nominations, and inquiries are invited. Applications should include, as separate documents, a CV or resume and a letter of interest addressing the themes in the leadership profile.
