Northern Michigan University is seeking applications for a live-in Resident Director in Housing and Residence Life. The position is responsible for developing a living-learning environment in the residence hall to which they are assigned which is characterized by a sense of community among students through the house model, personal development opportunities, effective staff performance and meaningful interaction with other facets of the University. The Resident Director is expected to work independently. 12-month staff will have the opportunity to supervise other student staff and work with summer operations.
Responsibilities
Facilitate community building and the development of positive relationships within NMU's unique "house model."
Provide overall leadership to the residence hall by selecting, supervising, training and evaluating a staff of paraprofessionals by conducting individual and group meetings. Provide ongoing training and support to encourage community development.
Respond to campus crisis situations, including medical, behavioral, Title IX, self-harm, psychological and facilities emergencies.
Thoroughly document and report all crisis situations and coordinate with campus departments to assist all students involved. Organize follow-up communication for all students involved.
Facilitate student development outside of the classroom through one-on-one interactions, leadership opportunities, and programming.
Provide advisory, leadership development and administrative assistance to the members of the hall government. Actively participate in their training sessions and provide feedback regarding their performance.
Assist student leaders in addressing community concerns through programming initiatives.
Provide supervision and leadership to paraprofessionals to ensure the goals of the departmental programming model are obtained.
Ensure a balance of social, recreational, educational and cultural activities are offered to students within the hall, involving students in the development of these programs to the greatest degree possible.
Collaborate with the Dean of Students Office to adjudicate first-time discipline cases for students within the assigned residence hall in a timely and appropriate manner.
Complete a minimum of 10 scheduled office hours per week.
Be visible and available to students and staff, both in the office and throughout the residence hall.
Regularly tour residence hall and communicate with building and grounds staff to ensure a clean and well-maintained facility.
Provide leadership for various administrative work, and complete in a timely and accurate manner (i.e. reconciling credit card purchases, contract termination forms, arrival reports, etc.).
Assist students, parents, and other stakeholders with various questions, concerns and special requests.
Communicate regularly with residence hall students regarding University and departmental policies, regulations and procedures.
Actively participate in student staff training sessions, break coverage and departmental initiatives.
Approve all organized group activity and appropriately supervise hall sponsored activities within assigned residence hall.
Administer departmental programming funds and advise students in programming expenditures.
Assist with the promotion of campus programs, activities, and services.
Responsible for ensuring all aspects of the community contribute to a positive living environment.
Facilitate interdepartmental communication and coordination to assist students in understanding and utilizing resources available to them.
Submit objectives, statements, evaluations, annual reports and other written materials as requested or deemed appropriate.
Participate in a departmental special assignment or committee.
Demonstrate ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion by addressing the needs and concerns of underrepresented students.
Work in a safe manner, observing safety, health and sanitation codes, regulations or practices required by the University and government authorities. Work in a positive, productive manner with a wide variety of NMU's students, peers and other employees, and external constituents. Regular and consistent attendance is required to effectively fulfill the duties of this position.
Other duties as required, including performance of duties of a lower classification as needed.
Salary Information
The resident director position at Northern is a 10 month contract, with the potential for opportunities to extend employment into the summer. The targeted salary for this position is $36,427. The targeted salary if an RD works for 12 months is $43,888.
Additional Compensation
RDs also are provided with a two bedroom apartment as part of their compensation, and a partial meal plan valued at $3,906. RDs will receive a laptop and a free faculty parking pass.

Minimum Experience Required
One year of experience as a resident adviser or student service supervisor.
Additional Desired Experience (not required)
Master's Degree.
One year experience as a senior resident adviser.
Experience supervising student staff in a university setting.
Experience working with an orientation program, summer conferences, or supervising a residence hall front desk.
Experience working with Living Learning Communities.
Experience in strengthening inclusive communities and facilitating/planning professional development on diversity with paraprofessional staff.
Knowledge, skills, abilities or attributes, required for satisfactory performance of the duties of the position
