Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) seeks applications for a faculty member who will serve as Associate Dean or Senior Associate Dean in the Office of Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging (ODIB). The Associate Dean or Senior Associate Dean of ODIB is a practicing physician with leadership experience in medical education and a proven track record of programmatic experience and scholarship in the areas of health equity, diversity, and inclusion. Among the nation's top medical schools, VP&S continues to ensure that our matriculating classes are richly diverse across many dimensions, with over a third of the incoming class of 2025 being from groups underrepresented in medicine (UiM).
Responsibilities:
Under the leadership of the Associate Dean/Senior Associate Dean of ODIB, the Office of Diversity & Inclusion and Belonging provides support and programming for all medical students, and leads initiatives dedicated to students from many VP&S demographic groups.
Work collaboratively with ODI leadership to successfully lead and oversee the activities of the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, including but not limited to: providing key leadership for the monthly Diversity Counsel committee, providing essential guidance and leadership to further the recruitment and selection of future students with an eye towards diversity, equity, and inclusion; supporting and advising affinity groups; and leading VP&S's pathway "summer pipeline" programs for undergraduate students.
Work with others in similar roles across the medical center and campus.
Other duties include teaching and supervision of trainees, caring for patients in their chosen specialty 10-20% as well as supervision of related staff.
Represent the ODIB across the continuum of medical education when collaborating with the respective Admissions, Curricular Affairs, and Student Affairs departments, within the Office of Medical Education, and across the Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons (VP&S), Office of Faculty Professional Development, Diversity and Inclusion, and affiliated Hospitals.
Play a leading role in advising on curriculum development and renewal on topics related to equity of educational opportunity, diversity, and inclusion as well as anti-racism. The appointee will have many opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration and will be fully integrated into the overall infrastructure dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion in VP&S.
The appointee must qualify for a faculty appointment in an appropriate department within VP&S.
Educational Requirements:
MD or PhD degree and experience working with administration and faculty in an academic medicine.
Work Experience Requirements
A track record of scholarly engagement evident by presentations at professional meetings and peer-reviewed publications.
The applicant must be eligible for appointment to the Columbia faculty at the level of an Associate Professor or Professor.
Experience in the administration of graduate health professions education programs, diversity efforts or past participation in inclusive teaching and / or care and research related to diverse populations is required.
The successful applicant should have excellent communication, collaboration, and administrative and organizational skills.
Licensure Requirements
Prior to the start of employment, if an MD, qualified applicants must:
1) hold a medical doctorate or equivalent and
2) hold or be eligible for medical licensure in the State of New York.
