The Services for Transfer and Re-entry Students (STARS) mission is to advance social mobility for transfer, re-entry and independent students by providing transformative higher education experiences. STARS maintains an expertise on guiding students who disproportionately enter higher education through community colleges, and we actively remove systemic barriers that impede their success. We offer culturally relevant counseling and mentorship programs, as well as equity-centered programs that create access, cultivate belonging, motivate persistence, nurture wellness and establish the conditions where our students can thrive in and beyond college. Our communities include students who have experiences with: community college, returning to school at an older age, military, being parents, foster care, homelessness, incarceration or independent status.
About Student Success and Equity (SSE)
The Student Success and Equity (SSE) portfolio of departments is a branch of Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS) focused on academic support services, advising/counseling, student life/co-curricular programming, student identity development and retention/student success initiatives. Student Success and Equity provides services to the campus community with over 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students and has over 64 career employees and 475 student staff employees operating in 8 facilities/locations. The Student Success and Equity area includes a wide array of multi-disciplinary academic and non-academic units including: Disability Resource Center (DRC), Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP), Learning Support Services, Services for Transfer and Re-entry Students (STARS), Renaissance Scholars Programs (including Foster Youth and formerly incarcerated), Veteran Resource Center, African American Resource and Cultural Center (AARCC), American Indian Resource Center (AIRC), Asian American/Pacific Islander Resource Center (AA/PIRC), Chicano/Latino Resource Center (El Centro), Women's Center (WC), the Lionel Cantu Queer Center (LGBTQ+), Undocumented Student Services (USS), the UCSC Hispanic Serving Institution Initiatives (HSI), African Black and Caribean Student Success and campus committees/programs, and the Administrative and Business team for the unit. The UC Santa Cruz Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS), led by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Success, consists of nearly 250 team members spanning 3 major units and 21 departments. We also do our work through a range of resource centers dedicated to providing direct student support. JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction and supervision of the Associate Director, the Hope Scholars Program Coordinator provides direct services to former and current foster youth and coordinates programs to support their academic success, retention and graduation. In addition, the Program Coordinator collaborates with campus partners including the colleges, academic departments, faculty, student service units and student organizations on retention/student success initiatives. The incumbent will supervise and train student staff, interns, and volunteers, and engage in professional development to implement best practices and research based methodologies.

Help Hope Scholars develop strategies to solve academic and personal barriers.
With the partnership of the Associate Director, create, analyze and evaluate program information and provide data for review in developing and implementing strategies for meeting programmatic goals and enhancing processes.
Help students develop strategies to solve academic and personal barriers.
Develop and implement academic support services, including tutoring, study skills, career development, academic success and leadership seminars and workshops. Engage student leaders in workshop design, project management and implementation.
Coordinate orientation programs and workshops for current and prospective Hope Scholars.
Develop and implement programs and workshops that build upon the strengths of former and current foster youth with learning outcomes related to academic and student success.
Serve on campus committees to inform and provide the perspective of foster youth students.
Analyze and evaluate outreach sessions and other recruitment platforms and make program improvements based on findings.
Coordinate and oversee program spending plans, purchasing and administrative processes required to implement student programs.
Develop communications and informational literature pertaining to Hope Scholars at UCSC, including: informational materials flyers, pamphlets, Webpage development, email, phone, building/campus resources, promotional brochures, PowerPoint presentations, social media, e-brochures and e-flyers.
Keep abreast of student trends in higher education, particularly low-income and first-generation student populations, with a specialization in supporting former and current foster youth and system-impacted students.
Stay knowledgeable in regards to new laws and policies pertaining to foster care, housing, internships, and career/job access, and financial aid that may impact Hope Scholar students.
Participate in statewide efforts to expand and sustain Renaissance/Hope Scholar Programs and learn from colleagues about their initiatives that can be implemented at UCSC; and also share our best practices with colleagues.
Support fundraising activities such as grant-writing, campus funding opportunities, and donor relations.
Attend training and conferences as needed.
35% - Student Leadership
Maintain working knowledge of student leadership theories and practice.
Develop and organize effective peer advising programs, such as the Pathway Mentor and Transition to Alumni Peer Mentor Programs, designed to support the transition and retention of former and current foster youth students.
Train and support student leaders in their role as student staff.
Co-facilitate workshops with student leaders, and collaborate with other STARS staff.
Collaborate with campus units to increase the utilization and inclusion of Hope Scholar students.
15% - Outreach & Awareness
In collaboration with appropriate campus colleagues and STARS student leaders, develop and participate in outreach programs to various community college groups to help prospective students learn about Hope Scholars and enroll at UCSC.
Assist prospective students with inquiries about the Renaissance/Hope Scholars Program and the college application process, including referring and connecting students with Renaissance/Hope Scholars student staff and campus resources.
Develop relationships with prospective Renaissance/Hope Scholar students by phone, email, text, and with one-on-one connections. The purpose of these contacts are to assist prospective Renaissance/Hope Scholars to know the process of how to enroll at UCSC, gather student relevant information, answer general questions, and help students get to know relevant information about UCSC.
Coordinate workshops with prospective students who are former or current foster youth.
Participate in general outreach activities.
Attend and table at OPERS Fest, STARS Fall Welcome events and any other major campus events.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Knowledge in how to enhance students' intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices and leadership.
Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as collaborative teaching / learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring and advocacy.
Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged and under-prepared students in higher education, specifically current / former foster youth.
Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problem-solving.
Skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of students.
Multicultural humility and experience advising diverse groups of students.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate services / programs for students.
Ability to perform with frequent interruptions and / or distractions.
Outstanding interpersonal, written, digital and oral communication skills including the ability to make effective group presentations, and to describe programs and provide information with clarity.
Ability to be highly reliable, follow through on all assignments, prepare reports in a timely manner, and be punctual for meetings and appointments.
Knowledge of and experience in conflict management and intervention strategies.
Knowledge of Federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Masters in Social Work (MSW) or other related mental health services.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
