By equipping our community with knowledge and tools needed to be successful, we enable students to thrive while at our university.
About Services and Re-entry Students (STARS):
The STARS mission is to advance social mobility for transfer, re-entry and independent students by providing transformative higher education experiences. STARS maintains an expertise on guiding students who disproportionately enter higher education through community colleges, and we actively remove systemic barriers that impede their success. We offer culturally relevant counseling and mentorship programs, as well as equity-centered programs that create access, cultivate belonging, motivate persistence, nurture wellness and establish the conditions where our students can thrive in and beyond college. Our communities include students who have experiences with: community college, returning to school at an older age, military, being parents, foster care, homelessness, incarceration, or independent status.
About Student Success and Equity (SSE):
The Student Success and Equity (SSE) portfolio of departments is a branch of the Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS) and focused on academic support services, advising/counseling, student life/co-curricular programming, student identity development and retention/student success initiatives. Student Success and Equity provides services to the campus community with over 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students and has over 64 career employees and 475 student staff employees operating in 8 facilities/locations. The UC Santa Cruz Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS), led by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Success, consists of nearly 250 team members spanning 3 major units and 21 departments. JOB SUMMARY
Under the guidance of the Associate Director, the Renaissance Scholars Program Case Manager provides direct services to Renaissance Scholar students and coordinates programs to support their academic success, retention and graduation. The incumbent serves as a leader within the department on trauma-informed care and practices. They provide personal counseling, social and emotional development workshops, and independent living skills. They manage student cases to propel their development and success as university students. In addition, the Renaissance Scholars Program Case Manager collaborates with campus partners including the colleges, academic departments, faculty, student service units and student organizations on retention and student success initiatives. The incumbent is readily accessible to faculty, staff and students, and coordinates communication and student case management. The Case Manager tracks and reports data on the Renaissance Scholars population to the Associate Director. The incumbent will engage in professional development to implement best practices and research based methodologies. Independently develops and administers complex programs to provide holistic counseling to 'at risk' student populations. Provides leadership in the unit for serving independent students, including former and current foster youth, formerly incarcerated students, students who experienced chronic homelessness while growing up, or other traumas impacting family life. Provides the full range of assessment, counseling and advice to targeted students, coordinates case management plans and makes referrals to organization and community resources. Routinely addresses the most complicated and sensitive counseling situations. Serves as an expert on trauma informed care, and guides other counselors about the special needs of these underserved populations.

Provide complex multicultural academic counseling across disciplines and colleges / schools to 'at risk' populations (e.g., low-income, first-generation college, underrepresented populations, etc), with a specialization in serving former and current foster youth, formerly incarcerated students, students who experienced chronic homelessness while growing up, or other traumas impacting family life that lead a student to an independent status.
Meet with students individually to provide comprehensive analyses of student's issues and needs, strengths / challenges and provide solutions and alternatives to support student success.
Meet with students individually to provide counseling in the areas of university navigation, independent living skills, financial literacy, and short and long-term goal-setting.
Assess and diagnose underlying root issues / challenges that interfere with student success.
Help students develop strategies to solve academic and personal problems.
Develop, facilitate and monitor student action plans to increase academic and social success.
Prioritize student cases to ensure timely intervention is applied.
Works with academic departments and faculty to help resolve specific student academic issues.
Engage with colleagues in departments such as faculty, academic staff, the colleges, Financial Aid, Housing, and others to advocate on behalf of students and to seek resolutions to a myriad of issues impacting the retention and graduation pathway of students.
Refer students to appropriate specialized programs and resources. Follow-up and track utilization to ensure interventions are being applied.
Work with Slug Support Director and Case Managers, to coordinate and manage complex student cases, develop recommendations for response, taking the initiative to mobilize appropriate responses and / or services.
Collaborate with campus partners, such as Slug Support, Financial Aid and Scholarship Office, Smith Society, Disability Resource Center, Counseling and Psychological Services and EOP to address student cases, specifically financial and emergency support requests.
Communicate regularly with students including those who are on leave or have taken time-off and ensure they have an action plan to return and complete their studies. Maintain an institutional relationship with students who take time off.
25% - Policy Analysis, Program Reporting and Evaluation
Conduct ongoing program evaluation of student outcomes such as graduation and retention, with the support and guidance of the Associate Director of Renaissance Scholars Programs.
Maintain case management database of Renaissance Scholars, including degree progress and key resources for academic success.
Regularly track, report and brief the Associate Director and campus colleagues on the status of student cases of concern.
Research, monitor and track policy issues related to student success, retention and graduation.
Develop forms and instruments for intake, monitoring and reporting on student cases.
Participate in the development of annual goals and calendar of the STARS office.
Contribute updates to the unit's business continuity plan on an annual basis.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Demonstrated knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development.
Knowledge in how to enhance students' intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership.
Demonstrated experience with achievement advising and / or counseling students.
Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as collaborative teaching / learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy.
Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, and under prepared students in higher education, and specifically current/former foster youth, formerly incarcerated or system-impacted students, students who experienced homelessness or family trauma during childhood.
Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problem-solving.
Skills and experience in developing and administering counseling services designed to meet the diverse needs of students.
Multicultural humility and experience counseling diverse groups of students.
Ability to perform with frequent interruptions and / or distractions.
Outstanding interpersonal, written, digital and oral communication skills including the ability to make effective group presentations, and to describe programs and provide information with clarity.
Ability to be highly reliable, follow through on all assignments, prepare reports in a timely manner, and be punctual for meetings and appointments.
Knowledge of and experience in conflict management and intervention strategies.
Knowledge of Federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Masters in Social Work (MSW).
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
