The basics of this position:
Serves students in the TRIO Student Support Services program, a federally funded grant designed to support first-generation, limited income, and students with documented disabilities in reaching their academic goals. TRIO Advisors provide comprehensive and proactive advising, educational guidance, career and transfer planning services and assistance with applying for federal financial aid and scholarships. Additionally, TRIO Advisors plan and implement cultural enrichment activities, college tours, workshops, and other programming that increases student retention, graduation and success.
What you'll do:
• Assists students with post-secondary course selection, academic planning, financial aid counseling, career exploration, financial literacy and transfer advising including: o Assists students in the development of an educational plan including clarifying educational and career goals, choosing a program of study and assisting the student through this decision- making process. o Reviews degree evaluations, transfer credits, college placement test results and other available information to assist students in creating an education plan that fulfills their selected program’s requirements. o Establishes and maintains communication and positive rapport with students. Provides proactive advising and case management for students identified on caseload, monitors academic progress, and implements mid-semester academic reviews. o Supports students throughout the academic advising process including the interpretation of assessment test scores, standards of academic progress, and utilization of technology tools. o Assists student in clarifying their transfer plans and in determining the courses of action to transfer. o Provides students with career exploration services including reviewing career assessment, results interpretation, and assistance in career choice and program selection. • Assists with new TRIO student recruitment efforts, including facilitating orientations, meeting with students to complete Academic Success Plans, and facilitating presentations to various stakeholders. • Assists students in applying for federal financial aid, including completing the FAFSA, and assistance in identifying and applying for scholarships. • May train and supervise student workers, serves on committees related to academic advising retention and/or student success, monitor services and prepares reports, as needed. • Develops and implements programming to improve retention, persistence, and graduation rates. • Refers students to TRIO Peer Mentors, TRIO Academic Coaches, and/or to other on-campus or community resources, as needed. • Plans, implements, and facilitates personal, academic and career development workshops. • Plans and implements cultural enrichment activities, and college tours. • Maintains TRIO student files, tracks contacts, and maintains student records. • Assists with the completion of overall TRIO Student Support Services grant goals and objectives. • Builds and maintains cooperative working relationships with students, STLCC staff, faculty and transfer institutions. • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Education, experience, and other requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field. Two years’ experience preferred in advising, counseling, coaching, case management, training, and development.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in education, counseling or related field is preferred • Experience with retention, program development and student success initiatives • Experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting students served by the project • Previous experience working for TRIO Student Support Services or other TRIO programs
