The Director of Sports, Recreation and Wellness provides strategic vision for the development and implementation of an overall wellness model that integrates students' physical wellbeing, healthy lifestyles, social/emotional resilience skills, stress reduction and community building. Supporting peer educational approaches for the delivery of services, the Director oversees the student wellness initiative which includes healthy lifestyles and interpersonal relationships, drug/alcohol prevention education, recreation, and sports competition. The Director has a key role in the development and oversight of the Wellness Pavilion.
The position has direct oversight of the student sports, recreation and wellness programs. Specifically, the Director oversees the development, organization and supervision of the academic fitness classes, club/intramural sports, e-sports, wellness, recreation programs, and a robust student employee professional development program.
The Director is engaged in learning outcomes assessment, program evaluation, and continuous quality assurance. The Director is a member of the Student Affairs Senior Leadership Team and contributes to the provision of a transformational student experience.
Work Location: Chalon Campus (West Los Angeles) and Doheny Campus (Downtown Los Angeles).
Hiring salary can be above the posted pay range if candidate's qualifications are determined to be above the minimum requirements of the position description.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Creates, implements and assess the effectiveness of a comprehensive strategic plan for the sports, recreation and wellness program areas that furthers the institutional and divisional strategic plans and mission.
Develops and maintains an outcomes-based programming model, centered on the principles of holistic personal student wellness, fitness and recreation with a diverse student body.
Supervision of the Associate Director for Sports and Recreation and the related n programs including the Physical Fitness Classes, Club Sports, Intramural Sports, Group Exercise Sessions, Outdoor Adventure Trips and Special Events. Supervision of the Associate Director for Wellness and such Wellness programs as the signature Peer Wellness Advocates, Nutrition, the Lotus Initiative (sexual violence prevention), drug and alcohol abuse prevention co-curricular programs and activities. Supervision of undergraduate and graduate student workers. Supervision of adjunct faculty teaching fitness and recreation classes.
Oversight of the SRW facilities at Chalon and Doheny campuses. Recommend programming and policy changes based on current research concerning participation, interests, trends, fiscal analysis, and resource availability.
Collaborates with academic programs such as the Department of Physical Therapy Advanced Exercise Training Lab at the Wellness Pavilion.
Serves as a representative to the university and community to create partnerships, promote community engagement, and encourage active participation in sports, recreation, and wellness facilities and programs.
Collaborates with campus emergency and support services such as Campus Safety and Emergency Management, Information and Technology, Institutional Advancement (Communications, Visitor Relations), Facilities Management, and Auxiliary Services.
Maintains relationships with external sports associations such as UCLA Intramural Sports, and club sport leagues and associations.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Fosters strong collegial relationships with the Center for Equity, Diversity, and Justice, and Institutional Advancement and other key partners within the university and external partners.
Serves on various university standing and ad-hoc committees and projects, as requested.
Participates in campus wide events that support student engagement, recruitment and retention.
Required to work some evenings and weekends.
Performs other job-related duties, as assigned.
Job Requirements: Knowledge:
Collegiate recreational sports departments, fitness, health and wellness related programs
Physical education or kinesiology
Risk management of facilities, programming, and policies
Collegiate club sports, fitness, recreation related programs
Higher education administration

Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with campus wellness partners, both internal and external to the university.

Education:
Master's degree required in physical education, recreational sports, sport management or related field (degree must be from an appropriately accredited institution)
Experience:
Minimum three years management experience in recreational sports programming at a college or university with ascending positions and responsibilities.
Experience working with a diverse population
Leadership experience supervising professional staff
Experience teaching, coaching, or assessing program effectiveness
Experience with financial management
Experience with project management
Licenses and Certifications:
Current 1st Aid/CPR/AED
Current 1st Aid/CPR/AED Instructor preferred
Wilderness First Aid by the National Outdoor Leadership School preferred
Valid driver's license
