Job DescriptionJob Title: Campus Minister for Liturgical Arts
All Campus Ministers at Boston College promote the University's Jesuit, Catholic mission by working collaboratively to make available to the whole community opportunities for worship, retreats, service-immersion, and pastoral care.
Campus Ministers assist in the coordination of weekly student liturgies, major University-wide Masses, and prayer services. Campus Ministers also work in partnership on other Mission and Ministry initiatives, as well as other University initiatives, focusing predominantly on the intellectual, social, and faith development of undergraduate students. The role requires the ability to provide both pastoral care and spiritual guidance to students and others in the University community.
Though a generalist, each Campus Minister maintains responsibility for administering a specific departmental program. The primary responsibility for the Campus Minister for Music (CMFM) is to enhance the liturgical life of the Boston College community, particularly by the planning and execution of music for the following: Sunday Masses, special University-wide Masses, Liturgies for Reunion Weekend and Summer Orientation Sessions, along with other prayer events and special services that occur throughout the year. Further, the CMFM is responsible for the recruitment, training and formation of student instrumentalists and singers who form the Liturgical Arts Group (LAG). The CMFM manages the Assistant Music Ministers whose leadership and expertise help the CMFM to provide the professional wherewithal that fosters the development of the talents and skills of LAG members.
Title and salary commensurate with relevant experience based on the following titles and hiring ranges:
- Campus Minister II: Master's degree in Theology, Divinity, Spirituality, Pastoral Ministry, or a related field.
3 years of post-graduate, ministerial experience in university/high school campus ministry, or an equivalent experience. - Campus Minister I: Master's degree in Theology, Divinity, Spirituality, Pastoral Ministry, or a related field; plus some post-graduate. Ministerial experience in university/high school campus ministry, or an equivalent experience.
- Associate Campus Minister: No related degree or experience required. Catholic, with an affinity and understanding of Ignatian spirituality; eagerness to work collegially with colleagues and to engage in professional development; strong budgetary, communication, and organization skills, as well as a solid attention to detail.
RequirementsRequired Musical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1) In-depth understanding of the Roman Catholic liturgy and Catholic sacramental theology.
2) Skills in piano and vocal coaching.
3) Ability to lead a congregation on piano and with voice.
4) An appreciation and ease with various worship styles/environments and faith traditions.
5) Skills in scheduling and coordinating choirs/cantors and instrumentalists for various chapels on same weekend.
6) Ability to plan prayer services, memorial services, ecumenical/multi-faith services, reconciliation services, as needed.
7) Ability to communicate effectively, build relationships across the University with campus partners and other members of the
community.
8) Willingness and ability to collaborate with others within the Division of Mission and Ministry and other parties.
9) Familiarity with current trends in Catholic higher education, student affairs and spiritual development of college students.
10) Ability to work with diverse populations and to create a hospitable and inclusive environment for all.
11) Willingness and ability to work nights, weekends, and some holidays when needed.
12) Practicing Roman Catholic.
13. Knowledge and appreciation of Ignatian Spirituality.
