The Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education at Elon University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Education specializing in higher education, beginning August 2023.
The successful candidate will primarily contribute to teaching, advising and program development efforts within the M.A. in Higher Education (MHE) program, with possible teaching opportunities in Elon's General Studies (CORE) Curriculum. Specific responsibilities include teaching a standard course load; advising MHE students; and engaging in service to the MHE program, Department of Education and Wellness, and the university. In addition, the faculty member will be expected to demonstrate culturally responsive teaching and advising practices, and actively contribute to institutional, school, departmental, and programmatic efforts to cultivate inclusive and equitable learning environments. Candidates who have experience working with a diverse range of people, and who can contribute to the climate of inclusivity are encouraged to identify their experiences in their letter of interest. The ability to demonstrate a record of scholarly activity, including professional publications and presentations, is also a key professional responsibility.
Required Qualifications
Earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. from an appropriately accredited institution in higher education, student affairs, or related discipline with application in postsecondary organizational contexts. ABD candidates will be considered if they will earn their doctorate prior to August 1, 2023. Demonstrated commitment to excellence in culturally responsive teaching, research, mentorship, and/or advising that contributes to an environment of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Record of scholarly productivity and/or professional contribution in the field of higher education/student affairs commensurate with experience.
Desired Qualifications
Successful experience teaching at the graduate and/or undergraduate level. Experience mentoring students to achieve their learning and career goals. Professional experience working in higher education/student affairs administration. Active engagement and current membership with higher education/student affairs professional associations at the state, regional and/or national level.
About the M. A in Higher Education Program
The Master of Arts in Higher Education builds on the strength of Elon as a national leader in active and engaged learning. Students are immersed in the study of higher education in a student-centered environment rooted in hands-on, experiential learning with a global perspective. Enrollment is full-time in this two-year, 36-hour program that incorporates study away, two internships, a paid apprenticeship, and a capstone project.
In a small cohort of twelve, students learn and practice the principles for effective education; explore the functions, issues, and leadership of higher education; and prepare for leadership roles in colleges and universities. Graduates will leave the program as visionary professionals prepared to advance student learning and improve institutions of higher education.
