Basic Function and Responsibility:
Reporting to the vice president for student affairs, the Dean is a senior member of the student affairs leadership team. The Dean is charged with providing overall leadership and direction for developing, implementing and monitoring critical programs and processes for staff and students within the Division of Student Affairs that promote and sustain access, equity, diversity, and respect throughout Oakton College. The Dean oversees important college processes that include student conduct and Title IX and is instrumental to supporting the development of student engagement programs that increase the involvement, leadership development, and overall sense of belonging for Oakton students. The role currently provides leadership and supervision to four critical departments/offices. The role also requires collaboration with various College departments, administrators, faculty, and staff to promote an organizational culture that provides support and engenders respect for the diversity of cultural background, national origin, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, and ability among Oakton's student body and overall community.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as a senior member of the student affairs leadership team. This includes supporting the leadership, planning, advising, and assessment of Student Affairs divisional activities and priorities. Engage in active collaboration with other college leaders (i.e. VPs, Deans, Directors, and Student Leaders) to carry out strategic initiatives that support student success outcomes.
Supervise and evaluate departments, staff members, and major college events assigned to the Dean. These currently include Student Conduct & Title IX, the Office of Student Life and Campus Inclusion, Athletics, TRIO/Student Support Services, Equity Coordinators, and Commencement.
Actively serve on Oakton's leadership council and identified committees established to oversee diversity, equity, and inclusive practices throughout the College. This includes assisting with initiatives identified within the Oakton Equity Plan, as well as investigating and managing student concerns, complaints, and helping to resolve conflicts in compliance with college policies and legal practices. In addition, assist with implementing strategies designed to improve institutional-wide progress toward creating a diverse and equitable learning environment for students and college staff. When appropriate, provide advice, coaching, and consultation to individuals and groups regarding cross-cultural conflicts and disputes.
Oversee the College's administration of the Code of Student Conduct. Monitor, and when necessary, update policies and procedures to assure due process and equity is afforded to all students engaged in the College's conduct process, which support educational resolutions through a restorative justice lens.
Actively oversee and support the College's effective administration of (and compliance with) Title IX. This includes directing staff, conducting investigations, and training assigned staff on the policy and practices that are in alignment with federal guidelines.
Initiate and support activities that are in alignment with Oakton strategic plans and goals. Advise, collaborate, and initiate strategic processes that support the matriculation, persistence, graduation, and success of Oakton students, with a focused interest in increasing the equity experiences and success outcomes of underrepresented students and those most under-served by the college.
Provide consultation in designing and implementing student-centered changes that fosters and increases the values of diversity, equity and respect for students and all members within the Oakton community.
With the goal of supporting "The Oakton Student Experience", implement and evaluate workshops, presentations, learning modules and other strategic initiatives that actively promote and increase student access, diversity, equity and inclusion.
As directed, assess student affairs departments and programs. Produce and contribute to written reports and updates (quarterly and annually). On behalf of the College, prepare reports and related correspondence required by state and federal agencies that support access, equity and diversity.
Develop and monitor all operating budgets for the areas of responsibilities assigned to the Dean.
Perform other duties as assigned by the vice president for student affairs.
Job Requirements:
Qualifications and Working Conditions:
Master's degree in counseling, student personnel administration, higher education or closely related area is required. Doctorate strongly preferred.
Five years successful college level counseling/teaching/administrative experience including three years of progressively responsible administrative experience in higher education, and demonstrated experience working with a culturally diverse student population are required.
Three years of administrative experience including supervision of exempt professional staff. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse workforce and provide leadership in organizational change.
General experience supporting state and federal grants.
Excellent interpersonal, cross-cultural communication, diversity, organizational and problem-solving skills.
Clear understanding of cross-cultural, international and diversity communication theory.
