JOB SUMMARY:

The Area Coordinator staff member is an integral team member in organizing and implementing living and learning programs within our residential communities. The candidate must have the desire to work with a diverse group of students, staff, faculty, University administrators and external constituencies including parents. Successful candidates must possess a proven understanding and commitment to assuming leadership in a diverse, high-energy environment requiring the ability to consistently manage multiple simultaneous priorities. The position must carry out the mission and philosophy of the University of New Haven and is responsible for supporting and contributing to a positive atmosphere that facilitates respect, inclusivity and collaboration.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

1. Supervises and Manages Residential Communities
2. Oversee a residential community and supervise, train, and evaluate student Resident Assistants (RAs)
3. Be a live-in presence for 350-450 residents within your assigned residential community, working day,

weekend, evening hours and university holidays

3. Supervise graduate level Residence Hall Director
4. Advise the Hall Council student group(s) within the residential area
5. Conduct weekly area meetings and one-on-ones with area staff.
6. Utilizes the division’s Competency Learning Experience (CLE) to shape training, supervision, and

evaluation of staff.

7. Mentoring and advising student concerns and appropriately referring students to agencies on campus,

e.g., University Police, Counseling Services, Financial Aid, Health Center, etc.

8. Creating a safe community through policy education and awareness.
9. Participate in all crisis management and disaster preparedness procedures.
10. Opening and closing of the residence halls throughout the academic year and summer
11. Managing assigned residential facilities, including conducting health and safety inspections, facilities

management, room changes, etc.

12. Participating in a rotating 24/7 on-call duty schedule for crisis management.
13. Assist with the living and learning initiatives
14. Administer the departmental programming model including program approval, reviewing program

proposals, providing program feedback, and tracking program requirements

15. Manage the programming budget for your assigned residential area

1. Departmental Operations:
2. Oversee the maintenance work order process as well as the damage billing process while working

collaboratively with Facilities to address area needs and issues.

2. Attend weekly Residential Life staff meetings and one-on-ones with supervisor.
3. Coordinate operational aspects of residence hall openings and closings; health and safety inspection

process, schedule fire drills and room inventory process for areas of supervision.

4. Assist with summer and fall orientation programs, summer camps and conferences, as well as

Admissions Open House and Accepted Student Day events.

5. Coordinate hall check-in and closing procedures for all break periods and the summer vacation period.

Tasks include vacation key distribution and collection, billing, creating and disseminating the student list

of those approved to be on campus.

6. Assist Associate Director of Residential Operations with marketing and managing the room selection

process; including coordinating information sessions and executing communication strategies.

7. Assist the department with training and recruitment efforts of student and professional staff
8. Serve as part of the student support/case management team with the Office of Residence Life

2. Serve as a resource for students seeking support and a referral agent to other resources on campus

regarding academic, personal, or mental-health concerns.

2. Maintain communication with other campus offices/departments and respond to issues concerning

residential students.

3. Conduct disciplinary counseling and hearings for violations of University rules and regulations.
4. Responsible for the coordination and implementation of social and educational programs for their

residence hall and assigned areas.

5. Design, implement and assess a residential programming strategy that supports retaining students at

the University as well as in housing.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Required Education:

• Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills Required:

• Two years of professional residential experience preferred.
• Strong attention to detail and proven problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency with The Housing Director (THD) housing management software and Maxient conduct management software preferred.
• Must possess a valid Driver’s License
