Job Summary:

Under the leadership of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean, the Associate Dean for Preclinical Education is administratively responsible for Years I and II of the Curriculum.  The Associate Dean for Preclinical Education serves as the administrative head of the basic science faculty and oversees Academic Support and Intervention Resources (ASPIRE). 

Specific Job Functions:

  • The Associate Dean is responsible for administering the first- and second-year education programs
  • Meet regularly with the curriculum committee chair, the course coordinators and the chairs to provide leadership, vision, support, and oversight in order to ensure the development and implementation of a non-redundant, relevant, “cutting-edge” curriculum
  • Establishes and publishes the course schedule in consultation with course coordinators
  • Working with the chairs, recruits and arranges for all visiting lecturers and other support personnel for lectures, presentations, and teaching labs with the exception of OPP in the first two years of the curriculum
  • Works with the Associate Dean for Assessment and Educational Development in the evaluation and assessment process for all courses
  • Responsible for calculating credit hours for all courses in Years 1 and 2
  • Maintains course syllabi for COCA and HLC visitation teams
  • Oversees the teaching facilities on the WVSOM campus
  • Grants and tracks excused absences for students, and communicates those with course directors
  • Assigns final grades to students at the end of a course or system for all courses in Years 1 and 2
  • Helps lead the faculty in the design and definition of the Years 1 and 2 curriculum and in the development of educational policy consistent with the mission of the School
  • Supervises the Department of Biomedical Sciences Chairperson
  • Supervises Preclinical Education office staff and the Assistant Dean for Curricular Affairs
  • Works with the Assistant Dean for Clinical Sciences for the development and implementation of the 2nd year OSCE programs
  • Works cooperatively with the Associate Dean of Multicultural and Student Affairs regarding student issues and students in crisis
  • Serves as Chair of the Accommodations Committee and communicates students’ accommodations with course directors and the Exam Center
  • Stays abreast of current literature and national presentations on curricular innovations in order to recommend implementation of changes to the curricular programs to the faculty and the VP for Academic Affairs and Dean, in order to assure that WVSOM maintains a “cutting edge” educational program
  • Shares with the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean, the Associate Dean for Predoctoral Clinical Education, and the Associate Dean for Multicultural and Student Affairs the responsibility for student guidance, counseling, and discipline
  • Monitors and tracks academic performance for all students during the first two years of the curriculum 
  • Meets with all students who fail a course to counsel them on improvement
  • Leads the PASS program to monitor at-risk students
  • Supervises the ASPIRE team of academic advisors
  • Works with the other deans, evaluates, counsels, and advises faculty in meeting their responsibilities
  • Works closely with the Osteopathic Principles and Practices Curriculum Development Leader to develop and implement a structured, integrated OP&P curriculum throughout Years 1 and 2 of the curriculum
  • Prepares and administers the budget for the Preclinical Education Department
  • Approves purchases of supplies and equipment and maintains purchase records
  • Serves as ex-officio member of the WVSOM Student Promotions, OPP Integration and Curriculum Committees and the Curricular Assessment Subcommittee; serves as chair of the Textbook Affordability Committee and the Academic Policy and Procedures Committee
  • Responsible for knowledge of all COCA  and HLC requirements for accreditation, as well as AACOM initiatives in medical education
  • Serves as a member of AACOM’s group on Osteopathic Medical Education
  • Is an active member of the President’s Forum, Dean’s Cabinet, and Dean’s Advisory Council, and PASS Committee
  • Attends faculty meetings when invited
  • Teaches and facilitates as requested by the VP for Academic Affairs and Dean
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • Earned Doctorate Degree: D.O., M.D., Ph.D, Ed.D.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in academic administration and medical education including course director experience.
  • The candidate should have strong knowledge of curriculum planning, implementation and assessment.
  • If degree is Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) it must be from a COCA accredited college of osteopathic medicine.   Candidate must be board certified and must be licensed or eligible for a current license to practice osteopathic medicine in the State of West Virginia.
  • The successful candidate will have strong leadership skills and excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • A combination of recent and related experience and education may be considered.
